Finishes, tile, and coping: the three choices that change how your pool looks

Most of a remodel’s visual impact comes from three selections. Understanding what each one does makes the choices easier.

November 3, 2026

When homeowners picture a remodeled pool, they usually picture the water. What they are really picturing is the interior finish, the waterline tile, and the coping working together. Here is what each one does.

The interior finish sets the color of the water

Pool water is clear. The color you see is the finish underneath it, filtered through depth and daylight. Lighter finishes read as pale turquoise and make a pool feel bright and shallow; deeper blues and greys read as lagoon or lake tones and look dramatic at night under LED lighting. The finish also determines texture underfoot and how the surface weathers over the years in Florida sun and chemistry.

Waterline tile is the line your eye follows

The band of tile at the waterline is small in area and large in effect. It frames the water, hides the ring that forms at the surface, and ties the pool to the house. Glass mosaics catch light and sparkle; porcelain and stone read quieter and more architectural. The right choice depends on the finish beside it and the deck above it.

Coping is the edge you touch

Coping is the cap along the edge of the pool. It is what you sit on, step over, and rest a hand on getting out. Travertine and other natural stones stay comfortable in direct sun and connect the pool to a travertine or paver deck. Its profile, whether bullnose, square, or chiseled, changes how finished the edge feels.

Choose them together

These three selections are made side by side for a reason. A finish that looks perfect on its own can fight the tile beside it. We lay samples out together, in daylight, at your pool, and look at the deck and the house behind them before anything is ordered.
